School prayer has been a common practice in learning institutions for a long time. However, it is essential to highlight the relative strengths and weaknesses as indicated by two articles by Armstrong Williams and U.S.A Today. Therefore, this paper is to review the relative weaknesses and strengths of school praying. In addition, the paper will evaluate on the various viewpoints of prayer in school as related to the student morals and religion issues.
Voluntary prayer in school has been a leading practice in most schools globally. Prayer in schools has been regarded as an enhancement tool towards acquisition of knowledge. However, it is necessary to note the harm of school prayer. Crusades on restoring classroom prayer have been lined-up supporting the practice. Moreover, it has been regarded that the so-called voluntary school prayer could expand children morals and causes no harm. However, this is not the case. Prayer based on based on certain social classes could affect students of other social classes. This is referred to as discrimination. In addition, the student morals are withheld resulting to subjectivity among students.
Considerably, government sponsored voluntary prayer in schools is likely to threaten religious liberty. There are various religious groups represented by different students in schools. Therefore administering prayers to student of one religion denotes the preference of one religion over the other. For instance, Christianity is diverse ion the United States. Administering Christian prayers in classrooms discriminates other children of different religious practices (Kemp and Walker, 2004, pg. 144). Accordingly, the result of discrimination is conflict among children. The religious liberty in schools is thus threatened.
Religious instructions are best offered at the religious center and family levels. Homes comprise of one religious sharing community. Therefore, it is efficient and adequate to administer prayer to children at home level. At the same time, religious instructions are passed to children with regard to the common religion they share with the family without discrimination. Religious centers are even the best areas to conduct prayer for children. For instance, the church offers a reliable environment compared to the classroom, which is a constitution of various religions.
Notably, no student is forced to the Bible study or to attend the prayer class. However, this is a major source of conflicts in religion in schools. Harassment from the officials including teachers of the voluntary prayers in school is common. For instance, a teacher tells his student to wear headphones so that she cannot listen to the voluntary prayers. The result of this is conflicts among students including nicknaming others. The voluntary payer also evaluates believe of students in God a factor that is self-oriented. The law court in 1985, outlawed school prayer in Alabama as it strayed neutrality in religious issues. Moreover, students do not need an amendment to pray in school, and they can share their religious believes (Kemp and Walker, 2004, pg. 134).
According to Armstrong, denotes that the remarks by New Gingrich on renewing school prayer explain the deepness of American cultural divisions. Prayer in schools seems a less significant issue, but it has a greater effect on non-religious children. These include emotional provoking and distress among students. Framers of the Constitution never took account of restraints of school payer but considered the tyranny of the majority. Direct attack of religion by different religions on others is a betrayal for the American ideal of tolerance. Evidently, this is observable in schools reading prayers undertaken in the student environment. For instance, majority of the Americans are Christians. This does not regard that other religions views are unnecessary. School prayer thus due to the diverse of other religions discriminates others. Nevertheless, maintaining that school prayer is manifestly unconstitutional revolves on ignorance of the U.S history (Kemp and Walker, 2004, pg. 139). America was established by religious men and women based on religious beliefs unlimited but public oriented. Therefore, prayers in schools should not be discriminated.
The activist Supreme Court ruled religion neutral school prayer. This is an establishment of the wall of separation between the church and the public. Relatively, in schools prayer and religion differences have resulted to separation between Christians and non-Christians. The perception of Christians on no-Christians and vice-versa is vital among students in the United States. Considerably, the drive to protect the subtle sensibilities regarding the American children from dangers of religion is complex. This is so because, much of the religions are teaching children explicit religion cultures that constitute to child discrimination of other religions. Conversely, the true heart of school prayer matter is the function of religion in the public life. The perception children obtain from the public concerning religious issues either shapes them positively or negatively (Kemp and Walker, 2004, pg. 137).
In conclusion, humanist minority or secular on religious issues regards personal beliefs. School prayer is a practice that can promote children morality or demoralize the student and even learning. Voluntary prayer in schools has impacted on the general learning process within the school. Motivation within children has been withdrawn due to religious violence. Variety of religious practices in school has led to the outbreak of conflicts and religious differences in prayer activities. It is necessary to note that the best prayer activities from children can well be established in homes and churches. However, the deepness in the American culture can be explained through religion. Therefore, at some level classroom prayer should be encouraged to foster students especially in moral guidance and support. Evidently, school prayer has threatened religious liberty within learning institutions. Finally, it is significant to note that school prayer is a significant cause of religious differences and should be discouraged.
